Intake & Hotline Advocate, Part Time

Classification: Part time with option to transition to full time and hourly, non-exempt under FLSA 

 

Required Education and Experience: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.  

 

Preferred Education and Experience: Knowledge of domestic violence and power and control dynamics. 
 

Expected Hours of Work: Flexible scheduling, up to 40 hours per week. Shifts are in 8-hour increments to cover daytime, evening, and overnight hotline hours. Weekend hours available. 

 

Work Location: EVE’s confidential shelter in Lansing, MI 

 

Pay Range: $18/ hr. Starting  

 

Supervisor: Shelter Coordinator 

 

Summary of Functions:

Hotline Advocates provide support, information, referrals and some crisis intervention to survivors of abuse related to power and control via EVE’s 24/7 phone hotline and online chat. In addition, they will assist survivors in shelter with daily needs and help to maintain a safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment for individuals in shelter.  

 

Intake and Hotline Advocate Responsibilities: 

  • Provide trauma-informed, survivor-driven, and inclusive direct support to survivors via phone hotline, online chat, and in-person within shelter  

  • Answer and document all hotline call and chat-line messages in accordance with agency procedures 

  • Conduct intakes and send referrals for folks reaching out to EVE who would like to get connected with services 

  • Assist shelter residents with supportive listening, encouragement, and appropriate shelter needs  

  • Follow and enforce shelter guidelines, policies, and procedures with shelter residents   

  • Maintain safety and security of shelter property in accordance with shelter procedures  

  • Perform light cleaning throughout the shelter 

  • Document appropriate information for other shelter staff including shift logs, caller forms, task checklists, and other required documentation  

  • Attend regularly scheduled monthly meetings and trainings  

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to work on-call schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.  

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Walk up and down stairs (no elevator available) 

  • Ability to lift up to 50lb 

  • Noise levels can vary from silent to very noisy 

 

Must pass a criminal background check and central registry clearance check. Have reliable transportation.  

Legal Advocate, Part Time

Classification: Part time

 

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in counseling, Social Work, Family Ecology, Women’s Studies, or related field, or 1-3 years of experience working with victims of domestic or sexual violence or stalking.  
 

Expected Hours of Work: 28 hours per week. 

 

Schedule: 8-hour shift, day shift, Monday to Friday, no weekends. 

 

Work Location: In-person at the Personal Protection Office, with local travel expected and mileage reimbursement according to agency policy.  

 

Pay Range: $18/ hr. Starting  

 

Supervisor: Program Coordinator 

 

Summary of Functions: 

The Legal Advocate serves as a resource to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking for legal advocacy, safety planning, crisis intervention assistance, and referrals to community resources. The Legal Advocate will provide on-site services at the Personal Protection Order Office, will provide advocacy and support at PPO and criminal hearings, and will be expected to travel to other sites to meet client needs. This position reports to the Program Coordinator. 

 

Intake and Hotline Advocate Responsibilities: 

  • Provide information, support, and technical assistance to individuals seeking Personal Protection Orders (PPO) within Ingham County. Screen individuals to ensure that they qualify for EVE assistance with their PPO and provide appropriate referrals. Provide technical assistance to individuals whose PPOs have been violated. 

  • Provide information about and support at hearings associated with the PPO process. 

  • Provide advocacy to clients during the criminal process, including working with prosecution, law enforcement, and court staff and attending hearings with the client. 

  • Provide appropriate referrals to EVE Inc., Friend of the Court, Legal Aid, prosecutor’s office, police, and other community organizations. 

  • Develop and maintain effective communication and positive relations with court personnel, attorneys, law enforcement, and judges. 

  • Uphold survivor confidentiality laws and adhere to agency policy. 

  • Adhere to agency safety and security rules and procedures to protect clients. 

  • Attend education and networking meetings on behalf of the agency, as assigned. 

  • Provide information on the Crime Victims Services Compensation program to each victim and assist with application process when requested. 

  • Participate as needed in training and education projects. 

  • Coordinate follow-ups on PPO expiration dates and Proofs of Service, and on hearings related to both PPOs and on-going criminal cases. 

  • Any other duties as assigned. 

Position Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Intimate Partner Violence and the Power and Control Wheel. 

  • Sensitivity and knowledge of intimate partner violence, stalking, sexual violence, and trauma responses. 

  • Strong organizational skills. 

  • Strong ability to work independently. 

  • Written and oral communications are of professional quality. 

  • Experience or training in crisis intervention techniques. 

  • Ability to demonstrate empathy, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills. 

  • Ability to participate as a positive and supportive team member. 

  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries. 

  • Ability to be honest and courteous in all interactions. 

  • Use of computer for report writing and to meet job responsibilities. 

 

Must pass a criminal background check and central registry clearance check. Have a valid Michigan Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
